OVERVIEW
Lombok's Wild Southern Coast
South Lombok is the coastline most people mean when they picture the island's beaches, wide bays split by rocky headlands, coarse, dark-flecked pepper sand found almost nowhere else, and a swell that's put breaks like Are Guling and Mawi on the map for serious surfers. Kuta town anchors the region as the base most visitors work from, but the real character of this coast is spread out along the roads either side of it.
It's a region of real contrasts within a short drive of each other. Tanjung Aan and Selong Belanak are built up enough to have beach clubs and surf schools, Mawun and Are Guling stay deliberately bare, and Torok and Tampah & Lancing are still genuinely quiet, for now. That mix, rather than any single beach, is what defines the south coast.
