OVERVIEW
A big bay, two serious waves
Ekas sits on the southeastern side of the same large bay system as Gerupuk, roughly four miles across at its widest point, but far enough from Kuta that it stays genuinely uncrowded even when the more accessible breaks fill up. It holds two named waves, Ekas Inside, protected by headlands deeper in the bay and more forgiving, and Ekas Outside, exposed toward the open water and considerably more powerful.
Surf guides consistently rate this bay highly, and being far from the main Kuta strip is a real part of the appeal, a quality wave without the crowd that comes with it elsewhere.

THE BREAKS
Inside vs outside
Ekas Inside is the more forgiving of the two, sheltered by rock and headland, manageable for confident intermediates. Ekas Outside is a different proposition entirely, a heavier, more exposed wave that steepens and hollows out into barrels on bigger days, suited to advanced surfers. Both work best in the dry season when offshore winds and bigger swells line up.
GETTING THERE
Access & parking
The standard route is via Awang, followed by a boat across the bay to reach the breaks. It's a longer trip than Kuta's closer surf spots, budget extra time and expect to arrange a boat as part of the trip, either through a surf guide or directly with a local operator at Awang.

WHAT'S THERE
Facilities
Facilities remain basic, simple local losmen and warungs, alongside a handful of newer, pricier surf-focused resorts that have opened to serve visiting surfers directly. This isn't a developed tourist strip, most people come specifically for the waves and stay close to them.
TIMING
When to visit
The dry season, May through October, brings the offshore winds and bigger swells that make both breaks work at their best. Outside the dry season, conditions become considerably less reliable.
COMPARISON
Ekas vs Gerupuk
WHY CHOOSE THIS ONE
Gerupuk offers five breaks in one bay and a genuinely social, easier-to-arrange setup. Ekas trades that convenience for lighter crowds and two of the more highly regarded waves on this side of the island, at the cost of a longer trip out and a more basic setup once you're there.
GOOD TO KNOW
No lifeguard on duty. Both breaks are reef-based, not recommended for beginners or casual swimmers, arrange a boat and local guidance before heading out.
