Gerupuk sits about 15-20 minutes east of Kuta, a large bay built around a genuine, still-functioning fishing village rather than a beach resort strip. The bay itself holds five distinct surf breaks across a range of levels, all reached by short boat rides from the village, making it one of the most social and consistent surf setups anywhere on this coast.
Because the bay is naturally sheltered, Gerupuk holds a wave even when more exposed spots like Mawi are blown out by wind, making it the natural backup plan for a lot of surfers based in Kuta, and a genuinely solid option in its own right rather than just a fallback.

What's on offer
Inside Gerupuk, also called Bumbang Bay, is a right-hander over a flat reef, forgiving and suitable for all levels, a good entry point if you're newer to reef breaks. The outer breaks pick up more swell and suit intermediate to advanced surfers looking for something punchier. Across the five spots, there's genuinely something for most ability levels on any given day, which is part of why the bay stays consistently busy and social.
GETTING THERE
Access & parking
About 15-20 minutes east of Kuta by scooter or car on a paved road to the village itself. From there, all the surf breaks are accessed by boat, arranged through local operators in the village or through a surf school or guide based in Kuta. There's no walking or paddling out from shore to reach most of the breaks.

Facilities
As a working fishing village, Gerupuk has a genuine local feel with warungs and basic facilities around the harbour. Boat operators and surf guides are easy to find and arrange on the spot, this is a well-established, tourist-familiar setup despite the local character.

No lifeguard on duty. All breaks are reef-based and reached by boat, arrange transport with a reputable local operator, and check which break suits your level before heading out.
Gerupuk works reasonably well year-round thanks to the sheltered bay, making it a solid choice on windier days when more exposed breaks aren't holding up. It's genuinely one of the more consistent surf zones on this whole coast for that reason.
