OVERVIEW
South Lombok's A-frame classic
Mawi sits on the south coast between Mawun and Selong Belanak, a rocky headland splitting it into two coves backed by rugged green hills. It's one of the most consistently good waves on the island, an A-frame reef break with a right that's fun on smaller days and a left that can handle serious size, but it's generally reserved for more advanced surfers rather than beginners.
There's a real Robinson Crusoe feel to the place. One small warung shack sits at the back of the beach selling cold coconuts and mie goreng, and that's about the extent of the infrastructure, which is exactly why people who know it keep coming back.

Conditions on the ground
This is a working reef break rather than a swimming beach, a narrow stretch of sand backing onto rock and coral rather than a long open shoreline. The reef is shallow enough at lower tides to demand real caution, sharp coral close to the surface where the waves break.
GETTING THERE
Access & parking
By scooter or car from Kuta Lombok, heading west toward Selong Belanak before turning off onto the road down to Mawi, roughly 30 to 45 minutes depending on conditions. The road is rough for most of the way in, unsealed and pitted for around 75 percent of the route, so a scooter or 4WD handles it far better than a standard car.
The other option is by boat from Selong Belanak, a short ride around the headland that skips the road entirely and is worth asking about locally if you're staying nearby.
WHAT'S THERE
Facilities
One small warung at the back of the beach for coconuts and simple food, and that's it. There's no surf school on site, though several surf camps based in Kuta and Selong Belanak run day trips out to Mawi for guests who want to surf it without staying nearby.
TIMING
When to visit
May through September, the dry season, brings the most consistent swell and offshore winds, when the wave is at its best. Outside that window it's still surfable but considerably more variable. Watch the reef for a few minutes before paddling out, especially on lower tides.

WHY CHOOSE THIS ONE
Selong Belanak is the easy, sand-bottomed beginner wave with restaurants and hotels right on the bay. Mawi is the opposite, a serious reef break for experienced surfers with almost nothing built up around it. If you want the wave over the comfort, Mawi is the one to make the trip for.
