A bay that stays quiet
Mawun is a wide crescent bay tucked between two low, green headlands, about 20 to 30 minutes west of Kuta. Unlike Tanjung Aan, there's no beach club here, just a handful of local warungs near the parking area and a stretch of soft white sand that rarely feels crowded, even when a small tour group passes through.
The bay's shape is what makes it work. Rocky points at both ends break up the swell coming in off the Indian Ocean, so the water in the middle stays notably calmer than the open coastline around it.

Conditions on the ground
The center of the bay is calm and safe for a relaxed swim or float, with water sitting around waist to chest depth for 20 to 30 meters out. That said, the seabed drops off more steeply than Tanjung Aan's, and there's sharp reef on both sides of the bay that becomes shallow at low tide, so it's best to stay toward the middle rather than the headlands.
A small, forgiving wave breaks near the eastern point when there's swell, workable for beginners and longboarders on smaller days. Rip currents can pick up here during bigger swells, so it's worth checking conditions before heading toward the point.

About 20 to 30 minutes west of Kuta on a paved, winding coastal road, roughly 30 minutes on from Tanjung Aan. No 4WD needed. There's a small barrier gate near the sand where a parking fee is collected, cash only, so it's worth having small notes ready.
WHAT'S THERE
Warung's & facilities
Facilities are genuinely limited. A few local warungs sell fresh coconuts, nasi goreng, and mie ayam. Shade is available too, umbrellas can be rented outright, or used free of charge if you buy food or drinks from the warung they belong to. Basic paid toilets are available near the parking area. There's no beach club, no surf school, and no ATM nearby, so it's worth bringing cash and anything else needed for the day.

GOOD TO KNOW
No lifeguard on duty. Sharp reef sits close to the surface near both headlands at low tide, and rip currents can build during bigger swells, stick to the central swimming zone unless you're a confident swimmer. Waste can also wash up here during rainy season as local infrastructure catches up with growth.
Mawun rarely feels crowded, but arriving early is worth prioritizing during peak season, roughly July through August and around local holidays, when tour groups are more likely to pass through mid-morning. Outside those windows, the bay stays quiet most of the day. The dry season, May through October, gives the calmest, clearest water, while the wetter months bring a bit more swell to the eastern point.

WHY CHOOSE THIS ONE
Tanjung Aan has the pepper sand, a beach club, and a wider spread of food options, but it also draws more visitors given its closer distance to Kuta. Mawun trades that convenience and polish for a genuinely quieter bay with softer sand and calmer water, at the cost of very limited facilities and a longer drive. If a low-key morning swim matters more than amenities, Mawun is the better call.
