The first bay west of Kuta
Are Guling sits at the end of a palm-lined valley about 15 to 20 minutes west of Kuta, the closest of the south coast's quieter bays and the first one you reach heading in that direction. Development is minimal, a couple of bamboo warungs, a few local homes, and the odd surf school van, with green hills rising around the bay rather than any built-up frontage.
It's better known among surfers than casual beachgoers, and for good reason. The bay holds two distinct reef breaks, a longer, more consistent right and a shorter, hollower left, both of which draw a small, mellow crowd rather than the busier lineups further along the coast.

Conditions on the ground
Both breaks work over reef, so this isn't a casual swimming beach the way Tanjung Aan or Mawun are. The right is the more popular of the two, a long, playful wall that holds both smaller and bigger swells well, best around low to mid tide. The left is shorter and more hollow, better suited to confident, experienced surfers looking to test themselves at mid to high tide.
A channel runs through the middle of the bay, useful for paddling out but also where the strongest current rips out on an outgoing tide or during bigger swells, worth understanding before heading in. Sources are split on the best season, some point to the wetter months from October through April for the most consistent swell, others favor calm, glassy mornings in the dry season before the afternoon trade winds pick up, so it's really a spot that rewards checking conditions on the day rather than counting on one fixed season.
GETTING THERE
Access & parking
About 15 to 20 minutes west of Kuta by scooter or car. The road is paved the whole way, with the kind of curves and gentle inclines typical of this stretch of hill country, nothing that needs a 4WD. A small parking fee is typically collected at the beach.
WHAT'S THERE
Warung's & facilities
Facilities are close to nonexistent by design, a couple of simple bamboo warungs sell coconuts, snacks, and basic drinks, and that's about it. There's no beach club, no formal toilets, and no surfboard rental beyond what visiting surf schools bring with them, so it's worth coming prepared, especially if you're not surfing with a guide.

GOOD TO KNOW
No lifeguard on duty. Both breaks sit over sharp reef, shallow and hazardous at low tide, and a strong current runs through the channel on outgoing tides. Not recommended for beginners or casual swimmers, surfers should check conditions and their own ability before paddling out.
TIMING
When to visit
Early mornings tend to give the cleanest, glassiest conditions before onshore winds build later in the day. Because it's already a quieter spot than the more famous breaks nearby, crowding is rarely a major concern here even outside those hours, part of the appeal for surfers looking to avoid the busier lineups elsewhere on the coast.

WHY CHOOSE THIS ONE
Selong Belanak is the easier, more forgiving choice, sandy bottom, gentle waves, and a full spread of surf schools and warungs. Are Guling asks more of you, sharp reef, real current, and next to no facilities, but rewards it with a quieter lineup and genuinely good waves for anyone beyond a total beginner. If you're already comfortable on reef and want fewer people in the water, this is the better call.
