Where Lombok tourism began
Senggigi put Lombok on the map back in the late 1980s, and it's still the west coast's main hub today, hotels, restaurants, an art market, and the kind of infrastructure you won't find on the quieter south or east coasts. But Senggigi is really just the starting point. Head north along the road toward Bangsal Harbour and the Gilis, and the character shifts fast, a beginner surf beach and a rare black sand beach right on Senggigi's doorstep, then working fishing beaches, quiet roadside stopovers, and some of the best sunset viewpoints on the island. Keep going past Bangsal and the coast opens up again at Sire, a genuinely good family swimming beach with calm, flat water year-round and Rinjani in the background, it's really the same continuous corridor rather than a separate coastline.
This stretch rewards slowing down rather than rushing straight through to the boat. Mangsit's beginner surf lessons and Kerandangan's black sand sit just minutes from Senggigi itself, then Nipah's grilled fish and turtles, Klui's resort-backed sunset views, Pandanan and Kecinan's quieter local character, and Sire's resort-quality swimming further north, each has its own read on the same corridor, and none of them take more than a short detour off the main road.
