OVERVIEW
Senggigi's quieter neighbor
Mangsit sits just a few minutes north of Senggigi, close enough to borrow its infrastructure without any of the crowds. Small hotels and restaurants line the beach, but it stays a genuinely laid back place, popular with a mellow surf crowd rather than the day-trip groups further south.
The sand is the real point of difference, dark and pepper-toned with volcanic flecks running through it, closer in character to Tanjung Aan's coarser grain than to a true black sand beach. It gives the whole beach a different feel from the golden sand at Senggigi proper, just a five minute drive away.

Conditions on the ground
Gentle, moderate waves make Mangsit one of the better beginner surf spots on this stretch of coast, with a handful of local surf schools operating right on the beach. More experienced surfers head to Alang-alang Point at the far end of the bay for something with a bit more punch. The south end of the beach also has a decent reef, worth a look if you're snorkeling.

A short, easy drive north of central Senggigi on Jalan Raya Senggigi, about five minutes by scooter or car. The road is fully paved the whole way, no different from getting around Senggigi itself.

GOOD TO KNOW
No lifeguard on duty. Waves have been reported to build after sunset, swimming is best kept to daylight hours. The tidal zone is long with a moderate depth increase, worth wading in gradually rather than diving straight in.
Surf schools & facilities
A handful of small hotels and resorts line the beach, along with local surf schools offering lessons and board rental for beginners. Restaurants and warungs are available for food, and the vibe stays noticeably quieter and more low key than Senggigi's main strip, even with a similar level of infrastructure.
TIMING
When to visit
Mornings are best for a surf lesson, before the wind picks up and while conditions stay glassy. Come back in the late afternoon for sunset, one of the better reasons to base yourself here over busier Senggigi. Dry season, roughly May through October, gives the most consistent conditions.
