BEACH CONSERVATION

A quieter coastline
still needs guarding.

Lombok is still far less developed than Bali, but that will not last if construction outpaces planning. Thoughtful land use and better waste infrastructure are what keep a coastline worth visiting, not just this year, but for the next generation of travelers finding it.

WHAT'S ACTUALLY AT STAKE

Four things worth understanding

🏗️

Development pressure

Large parts of Lombok's coastline are still undeveloped, exactly the kind of setting that got quietly reshaped across parts of Bali a generation ago. Building with the land, not just on it, is what determines whether these bays still look like this in ten years.

🌊

Waste & rainy season runoff

Waste management across Lombok often lags behind visitor growth, and rainy season runoff can wash debris onto beaches that look pristine the rest of the year. It catches a lot of travelers by surprise. As LombokBeaches grows, part of the goal is putting revenue directly back into local clean-up efforts. Tag: Travel responsibly

Turtle nesting sites

Several south coast and Gili beaches are active turtle nesting grounds during certain months of the year. If you come across a marked nest or fresh tracks in the sand, keep your distance, skip the flash photography, and give hatchlings a clear path to the water.

🚫

No motorised traffic, by design

The Gili Islands ban motorbikes. Electric scooters and horse-drawn cidomo carts move goods and people instead. It is a genuine model for low impact tourism, not a quaint detail, and one worth understanding before you arrive.

🏛️

The Gili Matra Marine Protected Area

The waters around Trawangan, Meno, and Air aren't just popular, they're an official, government managed marine protected area covering roughly 2,954 hectares, overseen by Indonesia's Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries. Every diver and snorkeler pays a marine park fee that goes toward conservation. It's real protection, but not a complete one, research has found tourism infrastructure built beyond its designated boundaries has disturbed turtle nesting habitat, a reminder that official status alone doesn't guarantee the outcome.

BEFORE YOU GO

What you can actually do

1

Pack out what you bring in. Not every beach has bins, and not every bin gets emptied on schedule.

2

Keep your distance from marked turtle nests. No flash photography, and let hatchlings reach the water on their own.

3

Respect the Gilis' no-motor rule. Use a cidomo cart or electric scooter, not a request for an exception.

4

Choose reef-safe sunscreen where you can. Regular sunscreen chemicals contribute to coral bleaching over time.

5

Support local warungs over chain resorts where you have the choice. It keeps tourism income in the communities living on this coastline.

6

Say something if you see something. llegal sand mining and coral damage are real, ongoing threats, not just historical ones.

THE LOMBOKBEACHES MISSION

"An island doesn't need to be Bali's quieter cousin. Lombok's coastline deserves to be documented as its own subject, and protected as one too."

Every beach guide on this site notes what's genuinely undeveloped, and what's being marketed that way.
