Coral gardens, big fish schools and turtles off the Secret Gilis and the east coast, a long way from the crowds of the main Gilis.

This list covers the reefs most visitors never hear about: the Secret Gilis off Sekotong, where Gili Nanggu draws big schools of fish close to shore and Gili Rengit has some of the healthiest coral in the area, Gili Petelu and Semangkok on the east coast, and the turtles that turn up off Nipah Beach north of Senggigi.
Most of these spots are reached by boat and gear isn’t always available to rent, so bring your own mask and fins where you can. Go in the morning for calmer water, wear reef safe sunscreen and keep your feet off the coral, because it takes years to grow back.
