OVERVIEW
The largest of the Secret Gilis
Gili Gede is the biggest and most developed island in the Sekotong cluster, home to five small villages and a resident population of around a thousand people, which sets it apart from the mostly uninhabited islands nearby. It has real infrastructure without tipping into the party island territory of the northern Gilis, more a laid back island community than a resort strip.
The shoreline changes character depending on where you land. The north side has coral reef and proper sandy beach, while the west side is dominated by mangroves, so it's worth picking accommodation with the beach you actually want out front.

Conditions on the ground
Calm, shallow bay water sits off the north side of the island, with coral and sandy beach making it the better base for swimming and snorkeling. The west side trades sand for mangrove, which brings its own marine life but isn't where you'll want to spend a beach day.
GETTING THERE
Access & parking
Boat only, departing from Tembowong Harbour in Sekotong, roughly 10 to 15 minutes each way. It's a short, straightforward crossing compared to most of the other secret Gilis, one of the reasons Gede sees a bit more traffic than its neighbors.

The most real infrastructure of any island in this cluster, ranging from simple family-run homestays to higher-end options with private villas and pools. Most of the restaurants sit near the port, so it's worth confirming your accommodation offers dinner or booking somewhere within easy reach of the harbor area. There are no ATMs on the island and wifi can be patchy, so bring enough cash for your stay.

GOOD TO KNOW
No ATMs on the island and wifi can be unreliable, bring enough cash for meals and activities. No lifeguard on duty at any of the beaches.
Dry season, May through October, for the calmest crossing and the best swimming conditions. The island is small enough to circumnavigate by rented bike in a couple of hours, and the west side is the spot for sunset.
