OVERVIEW
The Liveliest of the Gilis
Gili Trawangan is the largest of the three Gili Islands and the busiest by far. A ring of white sand runs right around the island, and each side has its own character. The east coast faces Lombok and holds the main strip of cafes, dive shops and beach bars, with calm, clear water and a reef where turtles feed close to shore. The west coast is quieter and turns gold in the late afternoon, when people gather on the sand to watch the sun go down behind Bali’s Mount Agung. The north is the most relaxed stretch of all, with fewer buildings and more room on the beach.
There are no cars or motorbikes on the island, so you get around by bicycle, horse cart or on foot, and a full loop takes a couple of hours at an easy pace. Boats cross from Bangsal Harbor on Lombok’s north coast in 30 to 40 minutes. Snorkeling is good straight off the beach, but currents can run strong in the channels between the islands, so stay close to shore and check conditions before swimming out.

SAND & WATER
Conditions on the ground
Soft white sand runs right around the island, with clear, warm water that’s calm on most days. The east side is the easiest for swimming and snorkeling, with reef starting a short way out. Coral patches appear close to shore in places, especially at low tide, so water shoes help. Currents can run strong in the channels between the islands, so stay near the beach unless you’re with a guide.
GETTING THERE
Access & boats
There are no cars on Gili Trawangan, so everyone arrives by boat. Public boats and fast boats leave from Bangsal Harbor on Lombok’s north coast and take 30 to 40 minutes, while speedboats also run from Teluk Nare, just to the south. From Kuta, allow 2 to 2.5 hours to drive to the harbor. Fast boats from Bali come straight to the island in around 2 hours. Once you land, you get around by bicycle, horse cart or on foot.
WHAT'S THERE
Facilities
Everything you need. Gili T has the most restaurants, cafes, dive shops and places to stay of the three Gilis, plus ATMs, minimarkets and bicycle hire right along the main strip. Toilets and shade are easy to find at the beach bars, most of which offer loungers if you buy food or drinks.

GOOD TO KNOW
No lifeguards, and currents can run strong in the channels between the islands, so stay close to shore when swimming. Bring water shoes. They’re a lifesaver on the stretches where the sand gives way to coral, especially at low tide. Keep your feet off the reef itself, and use the moorings rather than anchoring on the coral.
TIMING
When to visit
May to September brings the driest weather and clearest water, with July and August the busiest months. Mornings are best for snorkeling, before the wind picks up. For sunset, head to the west coast about an hour before the sun goes down, as the best spots fill up quickly.
COMPARISON
Gili Trawangan vs Gili Air
WHY CHOOSE THIS ONE
Gili T has the most going on: more places to eat, more dive shops and a real nightlife. Gili Air is calmer and closer to Lombok, with a more local feel. Choose Gili T if you want energy and options, and Gili Air if you want to slow down without giving up comfort.
AROUND THE ISLAND
Which side to choose
East coast: the main strip, facing Lombok. Busy, social and convenient, with calm water and turtles on the reef close to shore.
West coast: quieter by day and the island’s sunset side, with Bali’s Mount Agung on the horizon on clear evenings.
North coast: the most relaxed stretch, with fewer buildings, more space on the sand and good snorkeling just offshore.
IN THE WATER
Snorkeling & diving
Gili T is one of the easiest places in Indonesia to snorkel with turtles, often just a short swim from the beach. Dive shops line the east coast and run trips for every level, from first try dives to the deeper sites around the islands. If you’re snorkeling on your own, go in the morning when the water is calmest and stay out of the boat lanes.
