OVERVIEW
The Quiet Gili
Gili Meno sits between Gili Trawangan and Gili Air, and it’s the smallest and most peaceful of the three. There’s no real nightlife, just a handful of small resorts, beach cafes and long stretches of sand where you can easily have a section to yourself. It’s the island couples choose for honeymoons, and the one people escape to when Trawangan feels like too much.
There are no cars or motorbikes, so you get around on foot, by bicycle or by horse cart, and a full loop takes well under two hours. Boats from Bangsal Harbor take around 20 minutes. Snorkeling is excellent straight off the beach, and just offshore in front of BASK sits Nest, the underwater sculpture by artist Jason deCaires Taylor, which most people simply call the Gili Meno statues.

SAND & WATER
Conditions on the ground
Soft white sand rings the island, with clear, warm water that stays calm on most days. Reef starts a short swim from the beach, with coral patches closer in at low tide. Swimming is easy along much of the coast, but stay near the shore, as currents pick up in the channels on either side of the island.
GETTING THERE
Access & boats
Public boats and fast boats from Bangsal Harbor reach Gili Meno in around 20 minutes, and speedboats also run from Teluk Nare, just to the south. From Kuta, allow 2 to 2.5 hours to drive to the harbor. If you’re already on Gili Trawangan or Gili Air, a short hop by island boat brings you over. Once you land, you get around on foot, by bicycle or by horse cart.

GOOD TO KNOW
No lifeguards, and currents can run strong in the channels toward Gili Trawangan and Gili Air, so stay close to shore when swimming. Bring water shoes for the coral patches at low tide, and bring cash, since ATMs on Meno are few and unreliable. Keep your feet off the reef and away from the statues, and use the moorings rather than anchoring on the coral.
TIMING
When to visit
May to September brings the driest weather and clearest water. Meno stays quiet even in July and August, though the best rooms book out early. Snorkel in the morning before the wind picks up, and head to the west coast an hour before sunset, when you can often have the beach almost to yourself.
COMPARISON
Gili Meno vs Gili Trawangan
WHY CHOOSE THIS ONE
Gili Trawangan is the lively one, with the most restaurants, dive shops and nightlife. Gili Meno is the opposite: small, slow and quiet, with the best snorkeling of the three straight off the beach. Choose Meno for peace, romance and time in the water, and Trawangan if you want energy and options after dark.
AROUND THE ISLAND
Which side to choose
East coast: where the boats arrive, with a few cafes and guesthouses and views back to Lombok.
West coast: the sunset side and the quietest stretch, with the Nest statues just offshore in front of BASK.
North coast: good snorkeling close to shore, with turtles regularly seen on the reef.
Inland: a small salt lake sits in the middle of the island. It’s worth a look, but swimming isn’t recommended because of the salinity.”
IN THE WATER
Snorkeling & diving
Meno has some of the best snorkeling of the three Gilis straight off the beach, with healthy coral and turtles a short swim out. The Nest statues, a ring of life size figures on the seabed, are easy to reach with a mask and snorkel from the beach in front of BASK. Go in the morning when the water is calmest and the light is best for photos, and keep your feet off the statues and the coral.

WHAT'S THERE
Facilities
Just enough. Meno has a small selection of resorts, guesthouses and beach cafes, a few dive shops, and bicycle hire. There’s very little nightlife and only a couple of minimarkets, so stock up on anything specific before you cross. Toilets and shade are available at the cafes and resorts along the beach.
